Rachelle Vasquez is a Houston native and art teacher, who received her BA in Art Education with a minor in Art History from the University of Houston.  Her work predominantly deals with the relationships between humans and animals, historical or fictional; and the relationships between humans and history itself.  Her work is often research oriented and very process driven, which often requires a great deal of planning and patternmaking.  She uses crocheting as her main method of creating art as it is reminiscent of traditional art making techniques but also implies a sense of care and value.  She also appreciates the juxtaposition of her subject matter with the delicate nature of the technique.   She has had residencies at Diverse Works and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.  Her work has been shown in various galleries throughout Houston, including solo shows at Lawndale Art Center and Box 13, and she has been reviewed in the Houston Press, Arts Houston magazine and Glasstire.
